Commander Gary Sakuma’s Message:

I can’t believe ten years have gone by as your Post 172 Commander! I’ve had so many good memories of our Post’s improvements and accomplishments. The Legion’s Four Pillars are great guideposts, and our Post is proud to support them all: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, Americanism, Children & Youth, and National Security. Please join us as we grow our Post, strengthen our programs, and continue our leadership within our Washington State Department. Some of our achievements include:

• We received recognition for quick renewals and member retention. We were one of only four posts in our state to meet our 2025 membership goal before January 1. (Quick reminder – if you haven’t already, please renew your 2026 membership today. Consider a multi-year renewal or “paid up for life” option! You can do it online at mylegion.org or send us your membership renewal check.)

• Bainbridge Island Firefighter/EMT (FF) Joe Gaffney was awarded the American Legion Department of Washington Humanitarian of the Year award for his off-duty water rescue of a kayaker in distress in Rich Passage, who had overturned and was pinned against a buoy and at risk of drowning.

• We awarded two $1,500 scholarships for deserving Bainbridge High School students.

• We earned over $7,000 to support veterans programs throughout our communities and state during our annual Armed Forces Day Poppy Drive at locations around the Island.

• We sponsored 4 excellent BHS students to attend the Boys and Girls State programs.

• We sponsored 2 Scout Troops and are proud of their accomplishments.

• We participated in the Grand Old 4th of July festivities, Memorial Day ceremony, and Patriot Day and Veterans Day commemorations.

My message to you in the future:

“Participate” – Do something for our Post

“Volunteer” – Make your life worthwhile

“Be Happy” – Do something good for someone else

“Build your Legacy” – Contribute to this community and country. I have enjoyed and am proud to be a member of our American Legion Post – I hope you feel the same sense of pride and enjoyment that I do!

Gary Sakuma, Commander of Colin Hyde Post 172
